Illinois Vioxx Litigation Law Firm

Chicago Unsafe Pharmaceutical Attorneys

Vioxx, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug manufactured by Merck & Co. and used to treat arthritis, was withdrawn from the market in 2004 due to concerns about the increased risk of heart attack and stroke associated with long-term, high-dosage use of the drug.  Vioxx, and other brands of rofecoxib such as Ceoxx, were one of the most widely used drugs to be withdrawn from the market.

The experienced Chicago unsafe pharmaceutical lawyers at The Law Group, Ltd. are dedicated to protecting consumers from unsafe and dangerous prescription drugs, including Vioxx, Levaquin, Avandia and Topomax.  If you or a loved one has been injured as a result of taking Vioxx, contact the knowledgeable Chicago dangerous prescription drug attorneys at The Law Group at (312) 558-6444 to schedule to learn more about a possible Vioxx lawsuit.

Vioxx Litigation

Vioxx was voluntarily removed from all markets worldwide in 2004 in light of unequivocal results from a clinical trial demonstrating that Vioxx nearly triples the risk of heart attack and stroke for those who took the product for an extended period of time. In fact, records from Merck & Co. show that a committee monitoring the safety of Vioxx in a clinical trial had early data suggesting that patients could be at increased risk of heart problems after as little as four months.

Shortly after Vioxx was withdrawn from the market, the skilled Chicago unsafe pharmaceutical attorneys at The Law Group filed the first worldwide class action lawsuit against Merck & Co. in the Northern District of Illinois on behalf of all persons who were prescribed Vioxx. According to our medical experts, a person is susceptible to a Vioxx injury beginning from the initial dosage, up to and including a week after discontinuing use of the drug, and perhaps for some time beyond that.

In 2007, one of the largest nationwide settlements in civil litigation history was finally reached between thousands of injured Vioxx claimants and Merck, in which Merck agreed to pay $4.85 billion into a settlement fund for qualifying victims to be evaluated on an individual basis.

Foreign Litigation

In 2005, the Chicago consumer protection attorneys at The Law Group filed the first class action lawsuit on behalf of all Italian citizens who died or were seriously injured by Vioxx in federal court in Chicago, Illinois. The representation of Italian consumers was undertaken in cooperation with Codacons, the non-profit organization established by Italian law with a mandate to safeguard consumers. Our knowledgeable Chicago-based dangerous pharmaceutical attorneys also work with ADUC, another Italian consumer-based organization whose goals are to protect and safeguard Italian citizens.

Our experienced Vioxx injury attorneys have also filed 11 class action lawsuits on behalf of citizens from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.
