Egg Recall

Update: The Law Group, Ltd. Inspects Decoster Egg Farm, Wright County Egg, October 5, 2010 after obtaining court order to inspect two farms where the bacteria, salmonella enteriditis, was found.

Description:

On September 15, 2010, The Law Group, Ltd. filed the first nationwide class action lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago, against Wright County Egg and Hillandale Farms a month following the largest recall of contaminated eggs in recent history.

The lawsuit accuses both farms of numerous egregious safety violations including the failure to comply with federal and state laws, including the Egg Safety rule, which effectively created an environment allowing salmonella enteriditis to infect producing hens. The lawsuit seeks recoveries on behalf of all consumers who died or were injured from salmonella enteriditis contaminated eggs. The FDA reports that at least 550 million eggs were recalled amid reports that salmonella sickened nearly 2,000 people.  Moreover, the lawsuit also seeks to establish a medical monitoring program for class members who were injured or at risk for future injuries.

Federal investigators reported finding salmonella bacteria in chicken feed in barn and walkway areas at the farms, as well as rodents, piles of manure, un-caged birds and flies too numerous to count, the FDA said.

Symptoms:

Salmonella contamination can cause fatal infections in children, the elderly, frail people, and those with weakened immune systems. In healthy people, salmonella can cause fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea, the symptoms usually lasting four to seven days.
