Injuries Caused By Accutane Accutane was known by its manufacturer, Hoffman-La Roche, to cause inflammatory bowel disease, but the product’s package instructions did not adequately warn the public about that risk. Less than five months after Roche pulled Accutane off the market over concerns that it could be linked to inflammatory bowel disease, a November 2009 study was released showing that users of the acne medication are almost twice as likely to develop a serious bowel disorder as nonusers. Other serious injuries are linked to Accutane, culminating in incurable diseases and even death.
The injuries caused by this drug may be severe. Accutane has been associated with the following injuries: • Severe birth defects • Spontaneous abortions • Depression • Suicide • Inflammatory Bowel Disease • Crohn’s Disease • Ulcerative Colitis • Erythema Multiforme • Stevens-Johnson Syndrome • Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis • Damage to liver, kidneys, central nervous system, pancreas, GI track, cardiovascular system, musculoskeletal system and the autoimmune system of the human body. • Death
Accutane Litigation The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which had approved Accutane in 1982, first warned the public of possible side effects, including depression and suicide, in 2005. Since then, several lawsuits have been initiated against Roche Holding AG, the manufacturer of Accutane, and millions of dollars have been awarded to victims of injuries caused by taking Accutane. In fact, just last year a New Jersey court ordered Roche Holding AG to pay $25.16 million in damages to a former user of its Accutane drug who blamed the acne medicine for his inflammatory bowel disease. Although Roche Holding discontinued production and sales of Accutane in the United States in 2009 citing falling market share and high operation costs, nearly 1,000 lawsuits are pending throughout the United States against Accutane’s manufacturer.
